People First Wisconsin is a statewide grassroots nonprofit advocacy organization run by and for people with disabilities, especially intellectual disabilities. We challenge the institutions, social policies and community attitudes that prevent people with disabilities from achieving full citizenship.
Our mission is to provide opportunity and support to persons with disabilities, especially intellectual disabilities to speak up for themselves and to speak up for those who cannot yet speak for themselves, about the issues that affect their lives. We also help people to develop the leadership and organizing skills necessary to make changes in the policies and societal structures that inhibit people’s rights to self-determination and full citizenship. We achieve our mission primarily by supporting local self-advocacy groups around the state.
